JOB DESCRIPTION:
The First Assistant at surgery should collaborate with the surgeon in performing a safe operation with optimal outcome for the patient. The First Assistant should always work under the direct supervision of a qualified surgeon during the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases of the surgical experience and the optimal outcome of the surgical procedure is always the primary responsibility of the attending surgeon. The surgeon must be physically present at all times in the operative room suite during the procedure.
EDUCATION:
State of Vermont RN license required. The University of Vermont Medical Center is moving toward an all BSN nursing workforce. All external candidates hired into, or current employees promoted to, an RN position will be required to obtain their BSN as outlined in the terms of their offer letter. Current internal RNs are strongl y encouraged to pursue a BSN to support this initiative.
EXPERIENCE:
An Operating Room First Assistant should have at least two years of practical experience functioning in that role and should also be able to provide at least a minimum of two letters of recommendation from surgeons who have worked directly with that person.
