DUTIES:
Hospitalists cover inpatient teaching medical services on a rotating basis. Hospitalists supervise and evaluate medical residents, interns and students on inpatient services on a rotating basis. The White River Junction VAMC is a teaching facility affiliated with Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmou! th.

Hospitalists also provide general internal medicine consultations to patients on the Mental Health and Surgical Services. Critically ill patients in the ICU are covered by a full staff of critical care physicians.

Blocks of time covering inpatient service are usually two weeks in length followed by two weeks of alternate duties. During weeks when not covering inpatient teaching services, hospitalistsÂ' duties include coverage of the Emergency Department and a small non-teaching service, administrative duties, quality improvement projects, and research.

Inpatient coverage is during daytime hours with only rare emergency nighttime coverage required. Duty hours vary between rotations but average 40 hours per week. HospitalistsÂ' schedule includes coverage on about forty weekend days per year with compensatory time off on weekdays that is independent of earned vacation time and Federal Holidays.

BASIC

REQUIREMENTS:
a.

Citizenship

. Citizen of the United States.

b.

Education.

Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) Schools (including foreign schools) a! ccepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

(4) For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required except as provided in M-8, part II, chapter 1.

Applicants must provide a copy of their college transcripts.

c.

Licensure.

Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.

Must pass a pre-employment physical.

Physicians must be proficient in spoken and written English.
