DUTIES:
The incumbent assists a physician in the provision of health care service. Will provide medical care independently within a collaborative practice with a licensed physician utilizing established practice guidelines.
Duties to include:
Outpatient Care:
History talking
Physical examination
Obtaining/preliminary interpretation of routine diagnostic labs, EKG & other tests.
Obtaining/preliminary viewing of routine radiologic/songraphic films
Formulating medical/differential diagnosis, institute appropriate treatment, including inpatient orders

Counseling and instructing patients on issues such as physical and mental health, including diet, disease prevention and therapy, family planning, among others
Implement therapeutic plan
Order appropriate medications, including controlled substances (requires addendum to scope of practice), with a physician's countersignature required with 24 hours
Provide emergent medical intervention as need be until physician arrives
Inpatient Care:
Round on surgical inpatients in conjunction with resident staff
Write admission and postoperative order
Assist in surgery
Write medication and discharge order
Review and implement appropriate plan of action with attending of record
Order and interpret laboratory tests, radiographic tests, and other tests deemed necessary
Refer to and consult with appropriate services
Procedures:
Giving intramuscular, subcutaneous, intr! adermal injections/immunizations
Perform arterial puncture
Assist with intubation when necessary
Venipuncture
Accessing infusaports
Assist in emergency procedures when necessary
Application of hemostatic technique as appropriate
Perform pelvic examinations
Wound care
Administer intravenous medications (as permissible under VA guidelines)
Insert foley cather
Use of suction apparatus
Suturing
Special procedures (require sign off by chief of service)
Removal of intravascular catheters
Perform intubation
Repair lacerations
Lumbar puncture
Chest tube insertion and removal
Thoracentesis
Perform arterial cutdowns
Advanced wound care
Superficial wound debridement
Perform initial ICU consults
May initiate CPR/CLS protocol
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship
: Citizen of the United! States.
English Language Proficiency
: No person shall be appointed to direct patient-care position unless you are proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Physical Requirements
: Must pass a pre-employment physical.
Education or Training:
Physician Assistant:
1. A bachelor's degree from a PA Training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA);
or
2. Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science;
or
3. Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed pr! actical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical techn! ician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Certification: As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment. This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.
